Biodiversity, the core theme of

Colas Environment Day

On Thursday, June 9th, Colas will hold its 2nd Environment Day at all locations worldwide. This year, the event is dedicated to biodiversity, a major challenge for the group, which launched a low-carbon and biodiversity strategy in 2020 to help preserve the planet.

The event is part of the group’s strategic CSR project called ACT (for Act & Commit Together), in which one of the 8 commitments is a pledge to “implement a low-carbon and biodiversity strategy to preserve the planet”. Last year, Colas Environment Day was dedicated to climate issues, and for the 2022 edition, biodiversity will be the focus. The aim of this event is to reach and involve everyone in the Colas group. The idea of this event is to inform, explain and raise awareness about biodiversity collapse and encourage teams to take concrete actions in favor of conservation.

On June 9, all Group employees around the world can participate in awareness-raising activities, including lectures on biodiversity, educational card games and a webinar.

“Preserving biodiversity is a real challenge for the construction industry. We at Cokes

We are fully aware of this, which is why we are committed to a low-carbon and environmentally responsible environment

biodiversity strategy. As such, we have taken the lead with several actions such as:

Awareness campaigns and training for our employees, development of renaturation techniques and more…” explains Anne-Laure Levent, Environmental Director at Colas.

Colas Environment Day serves as the culmination of a much broader set of actions in favor of biodiversity.

Since 2013, the group has set itself the goal of taking action in favor of biodiversity in each of its quarries and gravel pits by 2030. In 2021, 207 Colas sites had at least one initiative, including restoring watercourses, building niches and shelters for species to live in, aligning activity with breeding seasons, and more. Among the many actions carried out by Colas and accompanied by scientific experts, many are dedicated to the protection of local species, such as Great Horned Owls, Bonelli’s Eagles or Ocellate Lizards.

Colas now wants to extend this goal to all locations of the group. To this end, a guide to simple, easy-to-implement biodiversity initiatives has been published. Recommendations include planting native species hedges around cola sites to encourage conservation of environments and species.

At the same time, the group is participating in the Forest & Life program launched in France in 2021 and is now planting 15,000 trees in Côte d’Ivoire in a forest 30 km from the capital Abidjan.
