With the theme “World Environment Day One Earth Only” commemorated at St. Aloysius B Ed College
Mangalore: As they say “Better late than never”, although the whole world celebrated “World Environment Day” on June 5th, it was observed at St Aloysius B Ed College, Mangaluru on June 10th, 2022, a day to remind us , to be responsible for the environment and its protection, but also to raise awareness and describe the importance of Mother Nature.
World Environment Day was first celebrated in 1974 to provide a platform to raise awareness that the world faces issues such as air pollution, plastic pollution, global warming and rising sea levels on a daily basis. The theme of this year’s World Environment Day is “One Earth”. The idea of the “Only One Earth” theme is to focus on the coexistence of the world to create an atmosphere of peace, harmony, prosperity and health through saving nature and life. The politics of the subject is to create and adopt a lifestyle that should be free from pollution and full of grassland. The motto is still the same as it was 50 years ago, to protect mother nature. This planet is our only home and we must protect it for generations to come.
As we have all faced a deadly pandemic over the past two years, it has highlighted the importance of a safe, clean and sustainable environment like never before. Now it is alarming for all of us to care about Mother Earth and her resources. Global warming is a very big threat that poses challenges for us to ensure healthy life and protection of nature. India has already taken many steps to spread awareness and take corrective action to protect the Earth from global warming.
World Environment Day inspires us to do something about it and improve the environment without which we cannot live and to take appropriate measures and protect the environment without which life on earth is not possible at all. Small initiatives by people can make a big difference. These initiatives are: stop using plastic every day; One should plant a tree in a year; Take the initiative to keep your society clean and maintain hygiene. Don’t throw rubbish into rivers and seas; Be mindful and recycle; Try to reuse things; Drive less and bike more; Conserve water as much as you can; exploitation of resources to the minimum level; Among other things, do not allow acids and chemicals to enter the rivers.
The celebration of WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 202 at St. Aloysius B ED College, Mangaluru, began with a prayer song invoking God’s blessings, followed by a welcoming speech by Ms. Daphney and Ms. Sahana. Ashish Carvalho provided an update on the importance of World Environment Day, followed by a welcome dance from the students. The awards to the winners of various competitions held to mark the day were presented by Main Guest Environmentalist and National Environment Care Foundation (NECF) Activist Jeeth Milan Roche and Padmashree Prize Laureate 2022 Guests of Honor Amai Mahalinga Naik and Engaged , active and committed senior environmentalist Krishnappa P.
Ms. Suphala announced the winners of the various competitions. After a beautiful and meaningful song on EARTH, Padmashree Prize winner 2022 Amai Mahalinga Naik and Senior Environmentalist Krishnappa P were congratulated on the occasion with a scarf, fruits etc. Ravikiran Crasta and Mrs. Anusha PJ introduced Mahalinga Naik and Shri. Krishnappa K
After Ms. Rachana introduced the esteemed main guest, main guest Jeeth Milan Roche said to the audience: “Why do the teachers tell the students not to behave like animals when they do something wrong or misbehave? We need to stop making comments like this because if you look at it, animals are a lot more behaved and caring than humans. So it would be appropriate to say stop acting like humans.”
“Like a mother, the earth gives us life and nourishes us. Just as we would not be here without our mothers, we would not be here without our mother earth to take care of us. We must take care of Mother Nature as we take care of our mothers who gave birth to us. The celebration of World Environment Day should not stop with just one day, we need to take care of and care for the plants/trees all year round. Because of the development, trees are felled and a lot of oxygen is lost, but nobody cares. Green should surround us so that we can lead a healthy life, if not, with the growth of vehicles and buildings in our city, we will breathe carbon dioxide rather than oxygen. Together, let’s raise our voice for a cleaner and greener environment,” added Roche.
When we plant trees, we take a step in the right direction and become one with the environment. It is a symbolic and literal merging of man with nature. So the dignitaries stepped out and planted a seedling to symbolically bring meaning and purpose to this Environment Day celebration. No doubt humans are polluting and destroying our planet. This is worrying because pollution is a secondary threat to our environment today and the greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it. Can you imagine what our future will be like if we don’t heed the need of the hour? To raise awareness of this issue, the students performed a pantomime highlighting that pollution is toxic to the earth and why we need to save our environment. It was indeed a very thought provoking performance that instilled in everyone present a responsibility to protect our environment.
Father Farita Viegas, the director of the college, urged the students to follow the main guest’s words, for a better and cleaner environment, and that it is possible if everyone unites and fights for a greener and cleaner future (See watch the video below for more of her speech). Environmentalist Krishnappa said on that occasion: “The only way to honor our mother earth is to make this planet a much better place to live in by raising awareness of our environment and creating balance in our lives. We are made of the earth and going back to the earth. Rather than spending lavishly on a birthday party, planting a seedling will be remembered forever as the seedling grows into a tree and provides oxygen for others. People’s mentality should also change to create a better and cleaner environment. Yes, we can do it if we choose a better, greener tomorrow.” Krishnappa also recited some environmental slogans and everyone followed him.
The thanksgiving was suggested by Mrs. Sumitra. In summary, the earth provides enough to satisfy everyone’s needs, but not enough to satisfy everyone’s greed. In this universe there are billions of galaxies, in our galaxy there are billions of planets, but there is only one earth. We only have one earth. Let’s join forces and take care of it. Thanks very much!
