Portugal: Continente saves tons of fruit and vegetables from wastage
Customers at Portuguese retailer Continente have helped save over 360 tonnes of fruit and veg by purchasing the chain’s Zer0% Waste boxes, made up of fruit and veg almost exceeding the optimal consumption point. Since the project began in late 2019, more than 71,000 boxes have been sold, the retailer said.
Tesco says Brits are buying less and trading lower to control inflation
Britons are buying less, switching to cheaper products and shopping more frequently as they try to cope with rising inflation, supermarket giant Tesco said, describing the market environment as “incredibly challenging”. Tesco kept its full-year earnings guidance unchanged, although it reported a 1.5% decline in underlying UK sales in the first quarter ended May 28, broadly in line with analysts’ forecasts. They were down 1.2% in the previous quarter. For the full year 2022-23, Tesco forecasts adjusted retail operating profit of between £2.4 billion and £2.6 billion ($2.95-$3.20 billion), compared to £2.65 billion in 2021-22 .
Groupe Casino to simplify corporate structure in France
Groupe Casino has announced that it plans to simplify its corporate structure by merging all of its food retail operations in France, including Franprix, Monoprix, Distribution Casino France, Easydis and AMC, into a single holding company. The new holding company will be 100% owned by Casino, Guichard-Perrachon and will also increase the “readability” of the overall business, the group said in a statement.
UK: Biting success with five million orders
Home delivery platform Snappy Shopper expects to complete its five millionth order in the next few days. The company says that in 2022, retailers using the platform have consistently reported up to 160% higher cart spend. Mike Callachan, CEO of Snappy Shopper, said, “As we celebrate the milestone of our five millionth order through the Snappy Shopper app, we continue to evolve our technology to support independent retailers and combat the dark store threat to their businesses.”
The Czech online food retailer Rohlik collects 220 million euros in another round of financing
Rohlik Group has raised €220 million in a Series D funding round led by Belgian investor Sofina, the Czech online grocer announced. The group said the new round left the company’s valuation above the C-Series last July, making it a unicorn with a valuation of €1 billion ($1.05 billion). “The funds will be used to accelerate technical innovations, including fulfillment center automation, electric mobility and further expansion in existing countries,” Rohlik said in a statement.
UK: Poundland pilots two more convenience stores
Poundland plans to open two more of its ‘local’ stores as it expands the pilot to enter the convenience channel. The next Poundland Local branch to open will be the first in London. It opens on July 2nd at the Junction Centre, St John’s Hill, Clapham Junction. This summer the first Poundland Local Store will follow in the West Midlands in Sutton Coldfield. Shoppers will find items they would expect to find in a convenience store, including fresh fruit and vegetables, chilled and frozen groceries, bread and morning produce, hot pies and pastries, diapers and formula milk, beers, wines and spirits.
China’s billion-dollar shopping festival tests e-commerce giants and consumer appetites
China is in the midst of the “618” shopping festival, an annual period in which the country’s e-commerce giants like Alibaba and JD.com try to lure shoppers with massive discounts. This year’s edition comes against a difficult backdrop, however, as China grapples with the economic fallout of a Covid resurgence and subsequent lockdowns. Sales growth is expected to slow this year, but as lockdowns ease, analysts are forecasting Chinese consumer strength.

US: Kroger’s net and reported sales recover in the first quarter
The Kroger Co. posted robust sales in the first quarter of fiscal 2022 after experiencing pandemic-led growth a year earlier, beating Wall Street’s forecast for earnings per share and raising its full-year outlook. For the first quarter ended May 21, net sales were $44.6 billion, up 8% from $41.3 billion a year ago, Cincinnati-based Kroger said. “Kroger delivered strong first quarter results as we successfully executed our strategy of ‘Leading with Fresh and Accelerating with Digital’. We are incredibly proud of our employees who continue to put the customer at the heart of everything we do,” Chairman and CEO Rodney McMullen said in a statement.
USA: Sprouts Farmers Market partners with Instacart to accept EBT SNAP online
Following USDA Food and Nutrition Service approval, Sprouts Farmers Market now participates in the Electronic Benefits Transfer Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program (EBT SNAP) for same-day deliveries and curbside pickups posted through Instacart. The service is available at approximately 380 Sprouts stores nationwide and is powered by Instacart’s Carrot Payments platform.
USA: Unique Logistics International wins The Kroger Company as a new customer
Unique Logistics International, Inc. (“Unique” or the “Company”), a global logistics and freight forwarding company, announced a 12-month ocean freight contract with The Kroger Company, a new customer of the Company. Under the terms of the agreement, the company will act as ocean transportation and logistics provider for The Kroger Company from Asia Pacific to North America until April 2023.
US: Sprouts launches “virtual warehouse” solution for CPG distribution
Sprouts Farmers Market has joined Pod Foods’ distribution channel, which connects retailers and brands in a “virtualized wholesale” supply chain via an online B2B marketplace with integrated logistics. Austin, Texas-based Pod Foods said it will offer about 130 Sprouts stores instant access to its “virtual warehouse” for emerging consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands. The stores will be supplied from a new Pod Foods warehouse in Florida, covering a distribution network stretching from that state to Tennessee.
