After a four-year hiatus, Iron Chef is back, with five of the world’s greatest culinary masters pitted against up-and-coming chefs in a new eight-part series on Netflix. And for nearly 200 fans in wine country, the June 15 event was an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the season finale, meet the chefs and enjoy a meal prepared by the celebrities themselves.

While some critics have recently called “Iron Chef” irrelevant as it swims amidst a sea of ​​reality TV competition shows, it’s clear that Napa audiences weren’t enjoying it. Throughout the show, they cheered for the more dramatic passages, clapped at the intricate dishes that came out successful, and screamed dizzily along as chairman and martial arts master Mark Dacascos uttered his opening catchphrase, “Allez cuisine!”

Hosted by the Napa Valley Film Festival, the event sold out quickly, proving that Iron Chef, even after it aired in 1993, still has a loyal fan base among foodies.

One guest got up after the screening to address the chefs and tearfully said: “The last two and a half years I’ve been housebound and in my head… to be able to see you guys again… every one of you was such a part of my life…just thank you.”

In the final, Esther Choi of Brooklyn’s Mŏkbar took on Dominique Crenn’s “Iron Chef” team (from the three-Michelin-star Atelier Crenn in San Francisco); Marcus Samuelsson (a dozen restaurants in America, Canada, the Bahamas and Europe); Ming Tsai (cookbook author and culinary entrepreneur/TV star); Gabriela Cámara (Contramar in Mexico City and Cala in San Francisco) and Curtis Stone in an action-packed seafood smack down that included Samuelsson’s delicious Lobster Bird Dumpling.

In this new format, the chefs had just one hour to create their impromptu recipes, with the added challenge that Choi and her two sous-chefs had to prepare five seafood dishes versus one Iron Chefs dish each.

In post-screening interviews, chefs and program hosts Alton Brown and Kristen Kish reflected on the history of the series and how it keeps relevant nearly three decades after its launch. The finale was recorded more than a year ago during COVID-19.

“It’s incredible to think that we did that during the pandemic – and wonder if we still have a role to play,” Samuelsson mused of the many restaurants that have had to close around the world. “So for me, the show became therapeutic as we express ourselves through our food.”

Cámara agreed, noting that the timing added stress to an already tough competition.

“I wanted to do the show because it was a really tough time for us,” she said. “It was the end of the pandemic but not really over yet, so we were all reconsidering what we were doing.”

Pitting Choi’s three-man team against the five-man Iron Chef team initially seemed unfair, Tsai said. But Brown interrupted.

“She’s been working on a machine she knows, so in line with her sous chefs,” he said. “The Iron Chefs honestly have their own plans. Yes, we will win as a team. But ha, really fuck you. And the Iron Chefs have never worked together and don’t have sous chefs, so it’s easy to lose track of things.”

Even for top chefs like Crenn, the competition remains a standout among other culinary shows.

“The fight was a good experience of cooking together,” she said. “Even though it’s like, hey I’m in the weeds, wow I’ve learned a lot. And it was amazing to watch the cooking skills, although at times I had to wonder – and I won’t say who they were – what the hell are they doing (with their dish)?”

So who reigned best in an attempt to win the famous Golden Knife award? Spoiler alert: The Iron Chef team won the fight and Choi, 36, felt “surreal and emotional” as she scored 82 points from judges including original “Iron Chef” Masaharu Morimoto, ultimately losing by just one point .

But viewers haven’t seen the last of Choi, the chef promised, hinting the revamped competition would go ahead.

“I lost,” she said. “Losing is losing, with a lot or with a little. But in a way I’m happy because now I get to be a part of my redemption in Season 2.”
