Holiday travel on July 4th: worst travel times, top destinations, petrol prices – Low Calorie Diets Tips

Despite rising prices, nearly 3.3 million Southern Californians are expected to travel over the July 4th weekend, according to the AAA.

This will be another journey Independence Day boost, which this year is expected to receive third-highest travel volume for local vacations, behind 2019 and 2018, officials with the Automobile Club of Southern California said.

Across the country, 48 million people are expected to travel.

“Earlier this year we saw that demand for travel is increasing and it’s not abating,” said Auto Club spokesman Doug Shupe. “People are ready for a break, and while things cost more, they’re finding ways to take a much-needed vacation.”

Despite the high prices at the pump, the vast majority of trips will be made by car.

About 2.7 million Southern Californians are expected to travel by car this Independence Day, according to the AAA.

“Road trip volume, even if average gas prices in the country surpass $5, will break previous records as 42 million choose to drive this Independence Day,” says traffic analysis company INRIX. “Recent problems with air travel and ongoing concerns about cancellations and delays could be driving this increase. In fact, the proportion of air travelers will be the lowest since 2011.”

Air travelers have recently faced thousands of flight delays and cancellations. Several major airlines canceled thousands of flights from their summer schedules, citing labor shortages and other issues.

The worst times to take to the streets:

According to INRIX, drivers should expect the longest travel delays ahead of the bank holiday weekend, particularly during the afternoons on Thursday, June 30 and Friday, July 1, as work commutes mix with leisure travelers.

In Southern California, the Auto Club recommends no driving on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday afternoons. According to the AAA, the early morning hours are generally the best time to travel on holiday weekends.

The busiest freeways in Southern California on the Thursday and Friday before the holiday are the 5 Freeway, the 10 Freeway, Interstate 405, and the CA-57.

Los Angeles’ 5 Freeway will have one of the most congested corridors in the country before July 4th.

Southbound I-5 between Colorado Street and Florence Avenue will experience its heaviest congestion between 4:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. Friday, according to INRIX. Traffic will increase by 147%.

Nationwide, INRIX expects travel times to increase by about 50% compared to normal, with drivers in major metropolitan areas being urged to prepare for significant delays.

fuel prices

On Tuesday, the average price per gallon of regular gasoline in California was $6.38 — much higher than a year ago when that figure was $4.23.

With gas prices nearing record levels in Southern California and across the country, the Auto Club had these tips for leisure travelers looking to maximize fuel efficiency on road trips:

  • Make sure your tires are properly inflated
  • Get rid of extra weight in your car not needed for road trips
  • Respect the speed limit and use cruise control when it is safe to do so
  • Avoid using overhead racks as they create drag
  • Park in the shade or use window shades to reduce heat build-up in your vehicle

Drivers can also download the car Club or GasBuddy apps to search for nearby gas stations with the lowest prices.
