The upcoming pre-fall collections are all about meaningful extras. There were oversized hoop earrings at Gucci and Chanel, elegant chokers and collar necklaces at Proenza and Carolina Herrera, oversized button earrings at Etro and Versace, statement cuffs worn on either wrist at Tory Burch and Stella McCartney, large pendant necklaces at Chloe and Dior and rings that have a distinct weight and can be worn on any finger at Dsquared and Oscar de la Renta. These big resort jewelry trends for 2023 are all about pieces that bring joy—and have the versatility to take you from meetings to gallery openings (anywhere, really).
“We want our customers to be looking for pieces that really complete their complete look and create a true designer’s vision from the runway to their closets,” says Libby Page, senior market editor at Net-A-Porter, of the latest crop of must-have parts. The balls from Balenciaga’s latex show were some of her favorites this season. “The collection was very blingy, felt very fun and playful and could appeal to both mothers and daughters.” She emphasizes that such potential heirlooms are always worth the investment. “We recommend looking for garments with versatility and durability that can be worn for years.”
However, when it comes to adding to your jewelry collection each season, there are many factors to consider. Rebecca Zeijdel-Paz, designer at Beck Jewels, suggests first determining which metal you prefer with your skin tone. “[Consider] what stones work for you and what cut and setting suits your style and wardrobe,” says Zeijdel-Paz. “Is there a jewelry style from the past that appeals to you? Or do you identify with the aesthetic of a contemporary designer?” She emphasizes that there are no wrong answers here, as long as you enjoy the process. “Have fun embracing new ideas and take the time to explore what works for you; There are no rules when it comes to wearing clothes you love.”
And when it comes to getting inspired by runway trends, you don’t necessarily have to shop for designers. “I think there are staples to start investing in – a chunky vintage gold chain, a classic watch, a pair of diamond studs, an eye-catching artifact – but it’s not standard,” explains Zeijdel-Paz. “It all depends on the client’s lifestyle and personal aesthetic, and there’s an intuitive element as well.” However, she continues, there are some important criteria to be met: “Fit, quality and integrity. Not all pieces are created equal, so it’s important to personally understand what you’re investing in.”
Designer Sewit Sium suggests completely bucking trends. “I think trends are about extraction vs support, so I don’t do that [pay attention to them,]She says, “I associate them with fast fashion and the speed of late capitalism. The more trends, the more seasonal collections, more money, more sales, and more cultural appropriation and theft.” Instead, Sium advocates adding to your jewelry box with 3 adjectives in the back of my mind: classic, timeless and anchored “I believe that for my pieces to be relevant 500 years from now, they have to be classic, timeless and imbued with truth, direction and way of life.”

Large rings for each finger
The great thing about this trend is that you can find pieces that complement it, no matter your personal style. If you lean towards minimalist and architectural designs, look here for pieces with minimal to no stones; focus on the texture of the materials and the blending of shapes. Do you prefer a maximalist approach? This is a great place to look for different colored stones that complement each other.
“For rings, more is more. Everything goes. When mixing metals, I like a little bit of silver in the gold mix,” says Sium. “Also, I wear as many pieces of gilded silver as I wear solid gold. They are indistinguishable to the eye.” These can be diamonds, semi-precious or rough stones. To create your own unique combination, start by picking a ring you love and centering the rest of your jewelry around it.
Statement Pendant Necklaces
Start shopping for your next statement pendant necklace by answering a few questions: “Is it classic? Does it have longevity? What’s the point? If I can part with a piece of jewelry, then it’s not for me. If it feels like an obsession, then it’s on,” says Sium. Pendants are certainly an abiding obsession for the designer (her models Cosmos Key and Malcolm X medallion are best sellers), not least thanks to the fact that they look amazing with everything.Try the style – as seen at Chanel, Chloé, Dior and more – with your favorite bikini or your go-too white Wear tank and flowy summer skirt.
Statement cuff bracelets for Both wrists
Flashy cuffs worn on both wrists have been seen at Dior, Etro, Oscar de la Renta, McQueen, Tory Burch, Loewe – just to name a few. Team the bangles (fan favorites include the graphic gold and crystal embellishments) with your favorite linen dress or tailored separates. These can be worn day or night and transitioned straight into the cold weather season – who doesn’t love a bracelet stack over a fitted turtleneck?!
Oversized button earrings
Button earrings are here to stay. They’ve been popular for a while, but what’s notable at the moment is the introduction of colored stones. TZR discovered these at Etro, Versace, Chanel and Oscar de la Renta. Pair yours with a printed sundress or colorful trousers for a streamlined but free-spirited vibe.
Elegant and refined collars
While a bold collar certainly stands out on its own, Sium suggests pairing it with other necklaces. “Start with a centerpiece and build from there with other pieces that complement it,” she suggests. “Stacking different lengths looks best in my opinion. Well, if any of these pieces have a pop of color, brilliant! A good stack will tell a powerful story.” But however you choose to wear your collar chain, it will elevate any outfit and take you seamlessly from the office to a date night.
Oversized hoop earrings
Before diving into a trend, Zeijdel-Paz recommends taking stock of the items you currently have in your arsenal and doing a quick gut check. “Think about how the piece makes you feel,” she says. “As you grow, will you continue to find it interesting? Will it become part of your life story? These are purchases that will stay with you forever, so you want to make sure you pick them for the right reasons.” However, oversized hoop earrings (seen at Carolina Herrera, Gucci and Staud) have a track record of doing so, with everything from summer jeans to vintage t-shirts to tailored sundresses to look timeless.
